Democracy Haiku
Thu May 10, 2007 at 11:20:55 AM PDT
Our local election integrity group is working on messaging for an upcoming protest. Here's a fun diversion, to demonstrate that we're all still human.
Protect Our Secret Ballot (King Co WA)
Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 01:53:44 AM PDT
King County Washington plans to adopt mail ballot tracking. This adds a unique barcode to your ballot which is linked to your voter id. This is unconstitutional and illegal. Activists Tim White and Allan Rosato have already sued San Juan County, the first jurisdiction in the country using mail ballot tracking.
White and Rosato will be speaking in Seattle WA Tuesday May 1st at 7:00pm. See the full announcement below the fold.
We've been discussing mail ballot tracking and unique barcodes on WashBlog: How Your Vote Can Be Tracked to you: San Juan County Ballot Tracking
Combating Dirty Tricks
Sun Nov 12, 2006 at 08:37:49 AM PDT
[Cross-posted to WashBlog.]
Rick Perlstein of The American Prospect just posted Look Back in Anger detailing two strategies used this last election cycle: robo-calling and phone jamming.
I'm curious if there are technical tools and approaches to help combat these techniques. Like having spam filters for our email.

Today's Voter Actions In CA & WI
Wed Oct 04, 2006 at 02:35:48 PM PDT
Today,
Voter Action announced two new efforts in their fight for election integrity. In Alemeda County California, they are insisting the Sequoia touchscreens not be used until they've been independently tested. In Wisconsin, they've petitioned to have the Diebold touchscreens decertified.
Even with pro-bono help, election integrity activism is very expensive. Please join me in giving Voter Action money. (Thank you.)

Report: Testing of Diebold AccuVote TSx
Sun Sep 03, 2006 at 10:19:26 AM PDT
[Originally posted on WashBlog]
On Tuesday Aug 29th, 2006, King County Elections Services began their "logic & accuracy testing" of the new Diebold AccuVote TSx touchscreen voting machines. King County now has 507 (?) of these machines. There will be one at each poll site.
If you want to see what the fuss is about, the L&A testing stretches 10 days long. It begins at 8:30am each day at the Elections Distribution Center 1215 Fir St, Seattle. I encourage people to poke their heads in and see what's what. It's a cool facility and it's good to get a feel for what's going on.

Expanding FlexCar Cheaply w/ Poll
Thu Aug 24, 2006 at 06:16:22 AM PDT
[Cross-posted to WashBlog here, and my blog here.]
I love FlexCar's idea of vehicle sharing. I want to see them, or something very similar, succeed. Below is my modest, low-cost, incentive-based proposal for how to expand FlexCar far and wide.
Dinner With AlanF
Wed Aug 23, 2006 at 06:52:53 AM PDT
AlanF is an election integrity activist from the Boston area. He recently visited Seattle. So we took time to have dinner together, Thursday August 14th.
Alan and I "met" via the Yahoo Group "election integrity and reform". Some believe the group's purpose is to discuss and promote Holt's HR 550. Others use our strength in numbers to promote and support each other's election integrity diaries on dailyKos. Either way, it's all good.

Poll Workers Needed! (w/ Poll)
Sat Aug 19, 2006 at 09:32:54 AM PDT
[Originally posted to WashBlog as Poll Inspector Training. Reposted here, because becoming a poll worker is something every one of us can do RIGHT NOW to help ensure election integrity.]
I headed down to the Annex building for my poll inspector training yesterday. Overall, it was a good experience.
There's roughly 4,800 poll worker positions in King County. According to our trainers, as of 1 or 2 weeks ago, they were 1,000 people short.
Everyone, step up and be a poll worker. Call 206-296-VOTE, email pollworker@metrokc.gov, or use this online form. If you care about democracy, want to learn more about our elections, or enjoy sitting around gabbing with your neighbors, then this is the job for you.
Below, I relate the experience, with extra emphasis on what I learned and observed about the new Diebold AccuVote TSx electronic voting touchscreen machines.
Injunction Filed Against e-Voting Machines (Colorado)
Wed Jun 28, 2006 at 12:27:33 PM PDT
Voter Action is a non-partisan group fighting the procurement and use of electronic voting machines. They're fighting the good fight. And they've gotten a couple of victories.
We need some of that kind of mojo here in Washington State. The machines here, provided by Diebold and Hart/Intercivic, were definitely improperly certified.

A Strategy for Election Integrity Activists
Tue May 16, 2006 at 04:47:16 AM PDT
We activists working on election integrity need a strategy. To be effective. To not burn out. To do the right thing.
So here's my strategy, to date, unrefined.
I swiped my strategy straight from Bernie Ellis. Until I attended his workshop, I couldn't figure out how to get started. I'm very grateful to Bernie and appreciate his leadership.
Vote By Mail: Bad for Democracy?
Wed May 10, 2006 at 10:08:23 AM PDT
The Democratic leadership of King County and the
King County Department of Elections are pushing for 100% vote by mail. Oregon State is cited as role model. Many of us
local election integrity activists oppose this action. We even wrote a
resolution for party caucus (which more or less got slaughtered in committees).
dailyKos user horsewithnoname called bullshit on my opposition. I replied that we're still researching and that I'll post our work as able. This is just a quick note, to share some stuff I've found thus far. (I'll post our "complete" work later.)

GOP netroots: MyGOP & iPod
Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 08:42:50 PM PDT
I subscribe to a few GOP mailing lists. Someone here on dailyKos once said to take the GOP talking points at face value. So I hold my nose and see what they're pimping week to week.
Today's email from GOP Chairman Ken Mehlman (wikipedia, dkospedia, SourceWatch) introduced MyGOP and the opportunity to get a special edition Republican iPod.

What About Trust?
Wed Apr 26, 2006 at 01:20:33 PM PDT
Should we trust our elections officials and politicians to conduct our elections fairly and accurately? It's an interesting question. What is trust? And how might we attain it? This entry (essay) is my attempt to articulate my thinking.

Rigging the 2008 Election (Cont.)
Sun Apr 16, 2006 at 11:18:08 PM PDT
This diary is in response to gmoke's
Rigging the 2008 Election. Having read her/his list, I'm largely in agreement. Definitely in the spirit, if not all the details.
Below is my list of election reform proposals, in brief. I've been updating it as I learn more.

Election Reformers in Nevada?
Tue Apr 11, 2006 at 03:21:39 PM PDT
Who are the election reform activists in Nevada? I'm looking, but not finding. Please help.
For doing a good job, my boss is punishing us with a trip to Las Vegas. (Yea, team building. Just the way I want to spend my time off.)
It'd be May 18, 19, and 20. I was thinking I'd visit with anyone local who is working on election reform.
Spiking the Punch (Review of CTG)
Sat Mar 18, 2006 at 11:35:29 PM PDT
Frustrating as
Crashing the Gate: Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered Politics is, mercifully it's also a quick read.
The rehash of Republican wrongs is unnecessary. Long on criticism and short on advice, the list of Democratic failures and shortcomings is familiar to regular dailyKos readers. For a book claiming to be about netroots, the topic gets very little coverage. Readers hoping to learn about people-powered politics will have to continue searching.

Top 10 Reasons Diebold Sucks
Wed Feb 22, 2006 at 06:00:57 PM PDT
Below is a copy of the handout
Washington Citizens for Fair Elections distributed at Washington State's Democratic Annual Crab Feed. Just so everyone knows the context: Like many counties, King Co is getting all new Diebold gear this year; it's a big problem.
This doc is a work in progress. I'm trying to distill all the reasons we (WCFE) oppose the use of electronic voting and counting equipment into something that is concise and understandable. I'd really appreciate feedback.
